Prostate Disease
Prostate disease is a very common condition that affects males. Prostate disease can cause annoying symptoms and cause many problems in a man’s life. It’s said that prostate disease is as common in ageing men as greying hair.

- Prostatitis – Inflammation of the prostate gland
- Cancer of the prostate
Prostate enlargement and prostate cancer are prostate diseases that usually affect men over the age of 50 years old. About half of men over this age will have some sort of prostate disease. Prostatitis is a prostate disease that can affect men of any age. Symptoms depend on what prostate disease you have but common symptoms of prostate disease are a difficulty in passing urine, pain during ejaculation, and frequent urinating.
Symptoms of prostate disease
The symptoms of the two prostate diseases, enlarged prostate (BPH) and prostate cancer are similar. This may lead to complications in diagnosing the prostate disease. It is important to consult a doctor to diagnose the prostate disease. Symptoms of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer include:
- Difficulty passing urine because of a weak and slow flow
- Frequent urination (as much as 10 times a day or more)
- Inability to control urination
- Difficulty in starting urination
- Waking up in the night to urinate
- Unable to fully empty the bladder
- Pain or burning sensation during urination
Symptoms of prostatitis include:
- Pain or burning during urination
- Severe pain behind the scrotum, or around the anus, inner thighs or lower back
- Blood in urine
- Fever
- Discharge from penis
- Pain during ejaculation

Treatments for prostate diseases
Prostate enlargement BPH
For this prostate disease, treatment is required if symptoms become persistent and bothersome or if they cause any complications. For mild symptoms, lifestyle changes can help. Prostate massage is also helpful for treatment and prevention of this prostate disease.
Other treatments are alpha-blockers, finasteride, which is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor which is also recommended for this prostate disease. Sometimes a surgical procedure called prostatectomy is recommended for this prostate disease.
Prostatitis
This prostate disease is treated by taking prescribed antibiotics to treat the infection. Antibiotics are generally taken for about 4-6 weeks, but generally depend on the type of infections. Many men use paracetamol and ibuprofen to ease pain and inflammation caused by this prostate disease.
Prostate cancer
This is a serious but rare prostate disease. Some of the treatments for this prostate disease are:
- TURP or prostatectomy
It is partial or whole removal of the prostate.
- Radiotherapy
It is given through an external X-ray beam.
- Brachytherapy
This is a hormone therapy and works by reducing the amount of testosterone in your body.
Depending on your prostate disease, different treatments are recommended. To avoid prostate diseases, you can regularly go for a prostate massage.
